Operating Modes - Emergency Backup

When there is a grid outage the system will automatically switch over to emergency backup, however, you can also keep your Franklin WH system in emergency backup permanently if you wish to. This will ensure that the batteries remain at 100% charge and will only be discharged in the event of a grid outage

Note:  During a grid outage, it is expected that solar production will stop initially. The Franklin Whole Home (WH) system will first discharge the battery to power your home. Solar production will resume only when there is sufficient energy demand from your home or when the battery requires recharging.

If your solar system is too large relative to your battery capacity, the system may not turn the solar back on to prevent overproduction. This ensures stable operation and protects the battery from overcharging.

How does it work?

  • Detection of a Grid Outage
  • The aGate continuously monitors grid power.
  • When an outage is detected, the system automatically disconnects from the grid to prevent backfeeding (anti-islanding protection).
  • Switching to Backup Power
  • The Franklin WH system then switches to its built-in battery backup (aPower) within milliseconds, providing seamless power to your home.
  • Solar Integration in Backup Mode
    • If your solar system is properly configured, it can continue generating power during the outage.
    • The Franklin WH system allows solar to charge the battery only if the battery has the capacity left
    • If the battery is full, the aGate may shut down solar production to prevent overcharging.
  • Load Management
  • The aGate prioritizes essential loads to ensure critical devices (e.g., refrigerator, lights, internet) stay powered.
  • If you have Whole Home backup then your entire home should retain power
  • Reconnection When Grid Power Returns
    • Once the grid is restored, the system automatically reconnects and switches back to your previous operating mode configuration
    • The battery will then start recharging if needed.
